The closure of two Islamic centers and mosques in the Monfalcone district of Gorizia, northeastern Italy, is dashing the hopes of the Muslim community, which consists mainly of Bangladeshi workers, Anadolu reported , citing local media.

According to Il Piccolo newspaper, Monfalcone Mayor Anna Maria Chisint, who represents the right-wing populist League party, closed the centers in November and declared the site a construction site to prevent Muslims from praying in the former supermarket.

Left-wing politician Furio Honsel said that the mayor's decision contradicts the most important articles of the Constitution.

Two Catholic priests, Flavio Zanetti and Paolo Zuttion, said in their statement that religious freedom is a value that must be respected.

The well-known imam Abdel Majid Kinani called on the general Muslim community to peacefully protest against the decision on December 23.
